Consistent physical activity is essential to weight control, disease management, and a healthy lifestyle.

img-fitnessWhile you're at the Duke Diet & Fitness Center, you'll learn how to exercise effectively, successfully, and safely. You will also learn how to simply add more movement to your day-to-day life. We will work with you to create a personal schedule of physical activity that fits your lifestyle.

Before you begin an exercise program we'll do a thorough health assessment. We will analyze the results, explain them to you, and use them to help you create a personal plan to increase your cardiovascular fitness, endurance, and daily energy expenditure of calories.

The plan is also designed to help strengthen your muscles and improve your balance, coordination, and flexibility. We offer a broad range of fitness opportunities, such as:

  • Pool activities: water aerobics, strength and flexibility training, and lap swimming
  • Gym activities: aerobics, circuit, strength, and flexibility classes; individual aerobic, stretching, and strength training

Our gym includes many different types of fitness equipment such as elliptical trainers, weight machines, free weights, treadmills, stationary and recumbent bicycles, rowing machines, Pilates equipment, and stair-climbing machines.

And on beautiful North Carolina days, many participants enjoy a walk on the nearby Duke University campus.

We encourage our participants to try a variety of activities. Personal training and massage therapy are two popular options you may want to add during your visit.


Our exercise physiologists are certified through the American College of Sports Medicine. They work along with physical therapists and massage therapists, all of whom incorporate the latest in exercise and movement science into their classes and individual sessions. They will help you find a fitness plan that suits your abilities, preferences, interests and lifestyle. You will learn to be physically active in ways that are comfortable and appropriate for you, and can launch you toward a pleasurable and active lifestyle.
