John Found the Time, Energy and Knowledge to Make Healthy a Way of Life

John Cotter of Apex, NC, talked about losing weight for years. “You tell yourself you need to lose weight, but finding the motivation is difficult,” he says. “It’s just so easy to pick up takeout on your way home or stop by the bagel shop in the morning. These habits are hard to break.”

At 292 pounds, the busy 48-year-old father and businessman knew it was going to take more than a diet to make a difference. “I felt sluggish, I had high blood pressure and I only had a few clothes in my closet that fit,” he says. “My wife called me at work one day and said, ‘You know, you aren’t happy; you need a change.’ And she was right. I went to Duke Diet and Fitness Center that same day.”

John enrolled in Duke Diet and Fitness Center’s four-week residential weight loss program. “It was a big commitment, but I needed that full immersion,” he says. “Dedicating that much time to your health, it sinks in and begins to take shape in you.”

Starting at 6 a.m. each day, John walked three miles around the Duke campus. He worked out at the gym (something he never thought he’d do); attended a variety of classes on managing blood pressure, making smart choices in restaurants, reading food labels and more; and he ate healthy, chef-prepared meals and snacks. John did all of this under the watchful eye of a team of medical, nutrition, behavioral and fitness experts.

 “I didn’t want a spa-like experience,” says John. “I chose Duke because of their track record and the opportunity to be taught by some of the leading experts in the field — many of them have been there for 20 years or more. They take a multi-pronged approach that teaches you about the medical and scientific aspects of weight loss and also how to manage real-life situations.”

Now a year later, John is still benefitting from the knowledge he gained and the habits he formed during the program. He is 60 pounds lighter and living the life he set out to achieve. His blood pressure and cholesterol are back to normal. He knows how to make smart food choices, and he takes the time to consider his health. The biggest rewards: more energy to play with his daughters, not to mention a lot more options in his closet.
