Celebrating Successes at the DFC

One of my favorite things about working at the Duke Diet and Fitness Center (DFC) is being able to celebrate milestones toward greater health and fitness with clients. Even though they happen all the time and in subtly different ways, it never gets old. I still get a giddy thrill when a client tells me a success story!

Eight Days to Better Triglycerides

During a recent Interpretation of Lab Results lecture by DFC PA, Diane Botticelli, I helped out by printing and quietly handed out individual results to each client in the audience as Diane lectured. As I was sneaking out of the room, one of the clients whispered for me to come over. I expected he had a question about one of his lab results. While it is quite usual for me to field questions in these situations (I love it when DFC patients have a real interest in their health and crave information that can help them get healthier), I didn’t think the middle of a lecture was the best time to respond to a question. Even so, I acquiesced to the request and ended up leaving the room with a big smile on my face. That’s because the patient beckoned me over with an incredulous grin. He pointed to his blood triglyceride level, which had gone down from 218 to 117 in just eight days!  It was evident that he was pleased, not to mention surprised, that his investment in nutrition and physical activity had paid off with such immediate results.

Fourteen Days to Better Cholesterol

Later that day, I was hurrying down the hallway to a meeting at the DFC and ran into another patient who stopped me. Just like the previous client, this client is one I have truly enjoyed interacting with even though I had more limited opportunities with him. His personality is much different from the first client, who is animated, gregarious and talks freely. The latter client is reserved with what would be a great poker face and a dry sense of humor. I wasn’t sure what he was going to say, but he asked me if I had seen his lab results. I replied that I had not seen them yet (I was not his assigned provider in the medical clinic) and asked them what they showed. His face then broke out in a large grin and he said, "You should look at them." So of course, I did. His LDL cholesterol had gone down 40 points in just fourteen days. What incredible results!

These are “Aha” moments that happen over and over at DFC. Moments when our patients realize that eating healthily and exercising more regularly, not to mention removing themselves from their stressful lives and decompressing, even for a short while, can have a profound impact on their health in meaningful ways. It invigorates me every time I get to experience one of these moments with a patient. I relish each episode and the nuances of each client’s recognition.
