Gift Yourself a Refill This Valentine’s Day!

February 12, 2020

For Valentine’s Day give yourself permission to refill your cup. Every day, not just on special occasions, it’s important to take care of your own needs. You need a full cup to be your best you and to share with others. If you don’t get enough sleep, exercise, alone time, nutrition, time for play, and all the other things that you need to be your best you, you don’t have enough for you, so you won’t have enough in your reserve to give to others.

Gift Yourself a Refill This Valentine’s Day. 5 steps to fill up your cup.
You need a full cup to be your best you and to share with others. Think of specific day that was great.

If you’re running on empty, handling stress and going the distance for yourself is tough, let alone being able to support those who need you. To keep your cup full, you need to connect to things that fill you up.

Visualize you at your best

Think of specific day that was great. Maybe this day stands out because you had energy, patience, you smiled and laughed more, listened to friends and family wholeheartedly, and overall you felt fulfilled.

What lead up to that great day?  In the days or weeks before did you:

  • Practice time management?
  • Exercise regularly?
  • Eat healthy and satisfying meals?
  • Spend time doing things you enjoy?
  • Get enough rest?
  • Meditate?
  • Journal?
  • Enjoy play time, such as golf, biking, or reading?
  • Have quality time with family and friends?
  • Stick to your healthy routines?

So this Valentine’s Day, give yourself the gift of selfishness and fill up your cup. Of course, taking a vacation to rejuvenate and refresh may be your first instinct, but vacations don’t last. Every week you need to find time for things that fill you up. It may be as simple as going for a walk outside, reading your favorite magazines, having adult conversations, or finding time to be alone.

5 steps to fill up your cup

Follow these five steps to get back to you.

  1. Write down a list of things that fill you up and bring you energy. Be specific.
  2. From your list, pick one or two that can fit into your week at least a few times.
  3. Schedule them in. This is a must! Things that fill you up need to be a priority.
  4. After, notice if you have more values you love and respect, such as patience, energy, feeling calm, being kind, or gratitude for the little things.
  5. Share your cup with others. Let it spill over! See how much more you have to give when you are full.
