Every client’s weight loss journey is different . At the Duke Diet and Fitness Center, our focus is on creating a completely personalized program for each individual’s unique needs. Our Master’s level exercise physiologists and fitness specialists are here to help you learn how to exercise effectively and safely. They work in coordination with nutrition to create a balanced plan for activity and meals that support a healthy lifestyle. Our team will:

 

  • Conduct a thorough health assessment to identify your fitness level, review existing health conditions and orthopedic issues. They will discuss your current activity routine and barriers to exercise, with a focus on determining physical activities that will be comfortable for you.*
  • Help you create a personalized plan to increase your cardiovascular endurance and increase your daily calories burned, while improving overall strength, balance, coordination, and flexibility. Our staff will work with you one-on-one for aerobic, strength and flexibility programs, with certified trainers and Pilates instructors. If you prefer, you can focus your activity in group classes or small group (2-4 people) training.
  • Provide regular check-ins to monitor your progress, make adjustments to your regime, and help to keep you on track.
  • Work with you to create an individualized plan that maximizes your results, as well as helping you develop a balanced activity and food intake plan to help reach your fitness and weight loss goals. Another aspect of personalized goal setting is to meet with our staff to have body composition testing with our state-of-the-art equipment, which offers more scientific information than just Body Mass Index.
  • Show you how to add more movement into your daily life - including a personalized exercise plan for home - as well as guidance on ways to maximize movement during regular activities. Our staff will educate you on the latest technology options that have been proven to be effective in helping establish a healthier lifestyle, and guide you in finding the option that is best for you.
*Depending on cardiac risk factors, such as age, family history or diabetes, you may be required to have an Exercise Tolerance Test prior to participation. This can be done prior to admission, or once you arrive. ETTs done prior to admission must be less than two years old.

Our physiologists and trainers incorporate the latest exercises and movement science into their classes and individual sessions during your visit to the Duke Diet and Fitness Center weight loss program.

Our broad range of fitness activities includes:
  • Pool activities: water aerobics, water volleyball, strength and flexibility training and lap swimming
  • Gym activities: aerobics, circuit, strength, and flexibility classes; individual aerobic, stretching and strength training
  • Gym equipment: treadmills, stationary bikes, steppers, rowing machines, elliptical trainers, weight circuit and free weights, Pilates equipment and a large indoor saltwater pool
  • Individual sessions: personal training and pilates
  • Spa services: myofasial/trigger point sessions and massage therapy services

To work more aggressively toward personal fitness goals—and receive an extra dose of encouragement along the way—personal training sessions are available.  Our trainers can develop a program to target your goals, plan your progression, personally instruct you on body movement and monitor your goal accomplishment.
